Beacon Harbor is a safe haven for residents with developmental disabilities, and more…it is a home. The heart of the campus is a group of three homes with private rooms and individualized care. Meals are prepared in the residence kitchens and enjoyed family-style with much joy and laughter. After a busy day of activities, residents relax together in the living room, watch television, play games, listen to music or spend time in their own rooms.
Thirty men and women now live in the three homes, along with a house parent for every six residents.
Life Help Industries, adjacent to the campus, provides training and meaningful employment for residents.
COMMUNITY SUPPORT
Beacon Harbor’s 10.5 acre property is located on a small lake at the eastern city limits of Greenwood on Highway 82 East. Viking Range Corporation, Basset Furniture Company and many other companies have assisted with furnishings and equipment.
Many church and civic groups provide social and Recreational activities for the residents. Concerts, bowling trips, Little Theatre productions, cook-outs and fishing are some of the fun activities. One of the highlights of the year is the week spent at Camp Bratton-Green, an Episcopal camp located at Gray Center near Canton.
St. John’s Methodist Church has a Sunday School Class, The Rainbow Class, For Beacon Harbor residents and the church regularly includes residents in the church services. The ladies enjoy a circle meeting once a month and everyone looks forward to choir practice each week. Throughout the year local groups come to provide parties and fun events. The visitors often have as much fun as the residents!
FUNDING NEEDS
Beacon Harbor is a non-profit charitable Corporation chartered on January 5, 1981.
Funding comes from various sources: individual contributions, United Way, grants from the State Department of Mental Health and Federal Programs. Most of the residents receive small Social Security payments that cover personal needs and contributions toward food and rent. Because most residents have limited resources no other fees are charged.
